Dental Assistant I (DA I)

You do not need any educational or formal training requirements for this position, and you will often receive training on the job. As a dental assistant I, you are allowed to perform basic supportive dental procedures that are specified in Virginia’s dental laws, under the supervision of a licensed dentist of course. Dental Assistant II (DA II)

The second level of dental assisting is the dental assistant II. Basically, this position shows that you have received formal training and allows you to perform additional duties, which you can view here.

To qualify as a dental assistant II by education, you must:

1. Be a current DANB certified dental assistant (CDA), AND

2. Complete a Board-approved course in expanded functions from a CODA accredited dental assisting program, AND

3. Apply to the Virginia Board of Dentistry for registration as a DA II by education

To qualify as a dental assistant II by endorsement, you must:

1. Be a current DANB certified dental assistant (CDA), AND

2. Be authorized to perform expanded duties in another state or territory in the US, AND

3. Have a credential with qualifications that are equivalent to the DA II requirements OR document experience in the DA II functions for at least 24 of the 48 months prior to application, AND

4. Have a good standing in the state where you are currently or formerly credentialed (i.e. good moral character and not having commited a probited act), AND

5. Apply to the Virginia Board of Dentistry for registration as a DA II by endorsement

Expanded Functions

To qualify in the administration and monitoring of sedation, you must:

1a. Receive the necessary training in basic resuscitation techniques from a Board-approved course, OR

1b. Be currently certified as a certified anesthesia assistant by either the AAOMS or the ADSA

How to Become a Certified Dental Assistant in Virignia

You also have the option to become a certified dental assistant (CDA) in Virginia, which gives you the opportunity to earn more as well as receive more benefits. The steps are quite simple, and becoming certified is highly recommended as you receive plenty of benefits for so little effort. In order to become certified, you must:

1. Complete a CODA accredited dental assisting program or have at least 2 years/3,500 hours of experience as a dental assistant, AND

2. Obtain CPR certification from a DANB accepted provider, AND

3. Apply for and pass the DANB CDA exam, which grants you CDA status as soon as you pass

Radiography Requirements

If you want to operate dental x-ray equipment and perform radiography procedures, you are going to have to complete the following:

1a. Complete a course or exam in radiology from a Board approved program (the CODA accredited dental assisting, dental hygiene, and dentistry programs offer this), OR

1b. Receive certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (AART), OR

1c. Complete the DANB RHS Review course and pass the DANB RHS exam
