Level I Dental Assistant

A level I dental assistant must complete a few requirements, but will allow you to perform any basic supportive dental procedure that is listed under DC’s dental practice laws. You can find the full scope of duties allowed here. In order to become a level I dental assistant, you must:

1. Complete high school or its equivalent (e.g. GED), AND

2. Complete a Board approved course in dental radiography, AND

3. Apply to the DC Board of Dentistry for registration

Level II Dental Assistant

A level II dental assistant is the next position, requires you to:

1. Complete high school or its equivalent (e.g. GED), AND

2a. Complete a Board approved or CODA accredited dental assisting program, OR

2b. Be a current DANB certified dental assistant (CDA), AND

3. Complete a Board approved course in dental radiography training

4. Apply to the DC Board of Dentistry for registration

How to Become a Certified Dental Assistant in the District of Columbia

Becoming certified is highly recommended, as the process is not difficult and you have much to gain. In order to become certified, you must:

1. Complete a CODA accredited dental assisting program OR have at least two years/3,500 hours of dental assisting experience, AND

2. Obtain CPR certification from a DANB accepted provider, AND

3. Apply for and pass the DANB CDA exam

Radiography Requirements

In order to legally operate dental x-ray equipment and perform radiography procedures in the District of Columbia, you must:

1a. Pass the DANB Radiation Health and Safety (RHS) exam or the DANB CDA exam, OR

1b. Complete a Board approved training program in dental radiography, AND
