Registered Dental Assistant

To become a registered DA in Texas you need to properly register with the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners (TSBDE). To do that you will have to:

1. Complete a course on basic life support, AND

2a. Complete a course involving procedures for positioning and exposing dental x-rays, infection control, and jurisprudence specified by the TSBDE, OR

2b. Become nationally certified by the DANB and complete the Texas Jurisprudence Assessment

3. Apply to the TSBDE for registration

Expanded Functions Dental Assistant

To have expanded duties you will have to meet some requirements, allowing you more functions under the supervision of a Texas licensed dentist.

Pit and Fissure Sealants:

1. Work at least 2 years as a dental assistant, AND

2. Complete a course in basic life support, AND

3. Complete at least 8 hours of clinical and didactic education in pit and fissure sealants approved by the Texas Board, AND

4. Register with the TSBDE

Coronal Polishing:

1. Work at least 2 years as a dental assistant

2a. Complete at least 8 hours of clinical and didactic education in coronal polishing approved by the TSBDE, OR

2b. Earn the national certification from DANB and complete the TSBDE jurisprudence assessment, OR

2c. Graduate from a dental assisting program that includes education in coronal polishing accredited with CODA and complete the TSBDE jurisprudence assessment, AND

3. Register with the TSBDE.

Monitor Administration of Nitrous Oxide

1. Pass a TSBDE-approved nitrous oxide monitoring course, AND

2. Register with the TSBDE

How to Become a Certified Dental Assistant in Texas

To become a certified dental assistant in Texas there are a few steps you will have to complete. They include the following:

1. First you will have to graduate from an accredited dental assisting program; usually dental assisting programs can be found at technical and community colleges. These programs usually run from 9 to 12 months, AND

2. Obtain CPR certification, AND

3. After receiving your dental assisting certificate, you may apply for and take the DANB CDA exam, which will grant you CDA status upon passing

Radiography Requirements

To perform radiography procedures and operate dental x-ray equipment you are going to have to meet one requirement:

  • You have to be a Registered Dental Assistant

Other than that you can’t operate x-ray equipment unless it is for on-the-job training. If so then you are allowed to perform procedures for a period of one year. You will be under the supervision of the dentist at all times and will not be allowed to position or expose x-rays.
