how to become a dental assistant in south dakotaThis level of dental assisting does not have any educational or formal training requirements so you can start as soon as possible. You must have a high school diploma or its equivalent and be at least 18 years old though. In most cases you will receive training on the job and as a dental assistant you will be allowed to perform basic supportive dental procedures (subject to South Dakota’s dental regulations) under the supervision of a licensed dentist. Advanced Dental Assistant

The next level of dental assisting is the advanced dental assistant, which allows you to perform expanded functions listed under South Dakota’s dental regulations. You can find out the allowed duties here. In order to earn this status you will have to obtain a license from the South Dakota State Board of Dentistry, which requires you to:

1. Obtain CPR certification, AND

2a. Complete a CODA accredited dental assisting program, OR

2b. Complete either a Board approved or DANB CDA exam, OR

2c. Have current certification in another state that’s accepted by the SDBD, AND

3. Apply to the South Dakota Board of Dentistry for an Advanced Dental Assistant license

Expanded Functions

If you wish to perform expanded functions, you will have to receive the necessary training for each specified function. They include intravenous line administration, nitrous oxide administration, and monitoring analgesic or anesthetic agents.

For intravenous line administration, you must:

1. Take a Board approved course in anesthesia assisting, AND

2. Receive intravenous line training

For nitrous oxide administration, you must:

1. Obtain certification in the administration of basic life support, AND

2. Complete a Board approved course, AND

3. Apply to the SDBD for a permit

For monitoring analgesic or anesthetic agents, you must:

1. Obtain certification in the administration of basic life support, AND

2. Complete at least 8 hours of an anesthetic assisting course, AND

3. Apply to the SDBD for a permit

How to Become a Certified Dental Assistant in South Dakota

You also have the option to become a certified dental assistant (CDA), which gives you the added benefits of a higher salary and other perks. The steps are quite simple, and becoming certified is highly recommended as the rewards far outweigh the effort involved. In order to become certified you will need to:

1. Complete a CODA approved dental assisting program OR have at least 2 years/3,500 hours of experience as a dental assistant, AND

2. Obtain CPR certification from a DANB accepted provider, AND

3. Apply for and pass the DANB CDA exam

Radiography Requirements

If you want to legally operate dental x-ray equipment and perform radiography procedures, you must meet a few requirements. They are as follows:

1. Be at least 18 years old and complete high school or its equivalent (e.g. GED), AND

2a. Complete a CODA accredited dental assisting program, OR

2b. Complete a Board approved course of at least 16 hours, OR

2c. Hold current DANB CDA certification and complete a Board approved course in hands on film placement and exposure, OR

2d. Hold current registration in another state, AND

3. Apply to the SDBD for a license in dental radiography
