Dental Assistant 

To become a dental assistant, you do not need to meet any education or formal training requirements. The majority of dental assistants receive on the job training, and allows them to perform any basic supportive dental procedure as listed under Pennsylvania’s dental regulations. Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA)

1a. Complete an expanded function dental assisting program from a 2 year college or a Board approved institution that offers an associate degree, OR

1b. Complete a CODA accredited dental assisting program with at least 75 hours of clinical and didactic instruction on restorative functions, OR

1c. Complete a certified expanded functions program with at least 200 hours of clinical and didactic instruction from a CODA accredited or Board approved dental assisting program, AND

2. Apply to the Pennsylvania State Board of Dentistry for expanded function certification, AND

3. Complete a Board approved written exam

How to Become a Certified Dental Assistant in Pennsylvania

There is also the choice of becoming a certified dental assistant (CDA), which allows you to earn more as well as receive additional benefits. In order to become certified, you must:

1. Complete a CODA accredited dental assisting program OR have at least 3,500hours/2 years of dental assisting experience, AND

2. Obtain CPR certification from a DANB accepted provider, AND

3. Apply for and pass the national DANB CDA exam

Radiography Requirements

To operate dental x-ray equipment and perform radiography procedures, you must:

1. Complete the DANB Radiation Health and Safety (RHS) exam, AND

2. Send a dental radiography application to the Pennsylvania State Board of Dentistry
