Dental Assistant

To be a dental assistant in Oklahoma, 30 days prior of employment you will need a dental assistant permit that the Oklahoma Board of Dentistry grants. To obtain one, you must send in a completed application form and pay the required fee to the Board. If granted you will be able to perform basic supportive dental assistant tasks under the supervision of the dentist. Although there are no education or formal training requirements you must have the necessary clinical and administrative training that can be offered on the job. Expanded Duty Dental Assistant EDDA

An expanded duty dental assistant can perform different types of tasks but must meet a few requirements first. There are three notable expanded functions that you can perform but you must obtain a permit and receive the necessary training from a CODA-accredited dental assisting program. They are coronal polishing/topical fluoride, sealants, and administering and monitoring nitrous oxide. 

For coronal polishing and topical fluoride you must:

Complete a minimum of 14 hours with a clinical component of a Board approved course of study and apply for a permit. Doing so will allow you to polish the coronal surface of the teeth, prepare teeth for band cementation or bonding of brackets, and apply topical fluoride and desensitizing agents.

For sealants you must:

Complete a minimum of 12 hours of a Board approved course of study, already earned the coronal polishing/topical fluoride permit, and apply for a permit. Doing so will allow you to place pit and fissure sealants.

For nitrous oxide you must:

Complete a minimum of 12 hours of a Board-approved course of study and apply for a permit. Doing so will allow you to assist in the administration of nitrous oxide.

Oral Maxillofacial  Surgery Assistant

In 2013 a new position called the oral maxillofacial surgery assistant was created in the state of Oklahoma although the requirements and scope of practice have not been defined as of yet.

How to Become a Certified Dental Assistant in Oklahoma

There is always the ability to become certified which allows you to earn more among other benefits and the process is fairly simple. To become one you will need to receive training from a CODA-accredited program or  have at least two years/3500 hrs. of on-the-job training. Afterwards you will be able to apply for the DANB CDA exam.

Radiography Requirements

In Oklahoma, there are a few requirements you will have to meet if you are to legally operate X-ray equipment and perform radiography tasks. You are going to need to obtain a permit from the Oklahoma Board of Dentistry and the requirements are as follows:

  1. Complete a minimum of 7 hours of a radiation safety and protection Board-approved course
  2. Have the current employing dentist verify the applicant’s clinical experience to the Board
  3. Apply  for a radiation safety permit
