How to Become a Dental Assistant in North Carolina
So you’re probably wondering how to become a dental assistant in North Carolina. Well, there are a few positions you can take, such as the dental assistant I, dental assistant II in training, and dental assistant II. There is of course the nationally recognized certified dental assistant as well. If you wish yo operate dental x-ray equipment you are going to have to meet a few requirements as well. Here is how to become a dental assistant in North Carolina, as well as dental assistant salary figures.
Dental Assistant Salary in North Carolina
Dental Assistant I (DA I)
Dental assistant I is the first level of dental assisting, and allows you to perform basic supportive dental procedures under the supervision of a licensed dentist, as long as the procedures are allowed in North Carolina’s dental regulations. There are no formal education or training requirements needed for this level of dental assisting. You can learn more about the state’s dental laws here at the North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners or learn about the tasks allowed here. If you wish to monitor nitrous oxide administration you must complete a 7-hour state Board-approved course in nitrous oxide sedation.
Dental Assistant II in Training (DA II in Training)
Dental assistant II in training can be looked at as an in between position, where an individual is currently in training to become a DA II. Training includes at least 2 years or 3,000 hours of chair side assisting, where the dental assistant is trained and allowed to perform expanded functions under the supervision of a licensed dental assistant. Administration and monitoring nitrous oxide, operating x-ray equipment and taking radiographs, or coronal polishing can not be performed unless you complete the required courses for each respective function.
The position of dental assistant II allows you to perform expanded functions under the supervision of a licensed dentist, but you will need to pass a few requirements first. Luckily, they are pretty simple, and are as follows:
1. Obtain CPR certification from a Board-approved provider
2a. Complete a CODA-accredited dental assistant program or one year or longer of a CODA-accredited dental hygiene program
2b. Have at least 2 years or 3,000 hours of chair side assistant experience, complete the radiography requirements, a 3-hour course in dental office emergencies, and a 3-hour course in infection control and sterilization
2c. Complete the DANB CDA exam
Expanded functions is a fancy term for extra tasks, which includes coronal polishing, taking radiographs, and monitoring nitrous oxide.
To perform coronal polishing a DA II must:
Complete a Board-approved 7-hour coronal polishing course
To perform monitoring of nitrous oxide a DA II must:
Complete a Board-approved 7-hour nitrous oxide sedation course
To perform operation and processing of radiographs a DA II must:

This allows you to earn more among other benefits. What you need to become a CDA is to pass the DANB CDA exam. Fortunately, if you choose to become a DA II this is an option you can take, which is essentially killing two birds with one stone. To qualify for the exam you must have at least 2 years/3,000 hours of chair side experience, obtain CPR certification, and then you will be able to apply for the exam. Upon passing the exam you will officially be certified.
In order to perform and process radiographs you have a few options. They are as follows:

1b. Pass a Board-approved radiography exam, which requires proof of 7-hours of dental x-ray training and 7 hours of a clinical dental radiography program in order to apply, OR
