How to Become a Dental Assistant in New York

How to Become a Dental Assistant in New York

You might be wondering what it takes to become a dental assistant in New York. Fortunately, the process is fairly simple. For example, whereas other states require radiography requirements in order to operate dental X-ray equipment and process X-rays, the state of New York does not. That makes it a little easier if you’re considering the job as all dental assistants can legally operate radiography equipment. But there are different job titles you can pursue  and you might not know what they are. They include unlicensed dental assistant, dental assistant with limited permit, state licensed dental assistant, and of course the nationally recognized certified dental assistant. This article will explain how to become a dental assistant in New York as well as dental assistant salary data.

Unlicensed Dental Assistant

To become an unlicensed dental assistant you won’t need any education or formal training, which is good in that you can start right away but you won’t be able to perform all the functions that a licensed dental assistant can. They can also only provide supportive services under the supervision of the dentist. Typically unlicensed dental assistants get their training on the job and perform such duties as:

  • Assisting the dentist with treatment
  • Sterilizing and preparing instruments
  • Helping patients get seated, comfortable, and record keeping
  • X-ray processing

Dental Assistant with Limited Permit

how to become a dental assistant in new yorkIf you obtain a limited permit you will be able to perform all the tasks a New York CDA can perform, as long as you are under the supervision of a dentist. A permit is meant for dental assistants that are looking to become licensed but have not taken or passed the exam requirements yet. A permit will expire after one year and can be renewed for an additional year and you will have to meet the following requirements:

1. At least 17 years old
2. High school graduate or its equivalent
3. Complete one of the two options below:

A. A one year, 24 semester hour course approved by the New York State Board of Dentistry from a degree granting institution or a BOCES program with at least 200 hours of clinical experience.

B. An alternative dental assisting course that is accepted by the New York State Education Department with at least 1,000 hours of relevant work experience.

New York State Licensed Certified Dental Assistant

A New York state licensed dental assistant can perform the full range of supportive services under the supervision of a dentist. To be a state licensed CDA you will need to meet the following requirements:

1. At least 17 years old
2. High school graduate or its equivalent
3. Complete one of the two options:

4. Complete one of the two options:

A. Pass the DANB CDA exam which includes radiation health and safety (RHS), infection control (ICE), and general chairside (GC).

B. Pass the RHS and ICE portions of the DANB exam as well as the New York Professional Dental Assisting exam.

5. Apply for a license from the New York State Education Department and that is how to become a dental assistant in New York.

How to Become a Certified Dental Assistant in New York

And of course there is also the option to become a certified dental assistant, which makes you a nationally recognized dental assistant. You will notice that becoming state licensed in New York follows many of the steps to becoming DANB certified as well, although you are not a DANB CDA if you chose to take the New York professional dental assisting exam (4B) instead. We suggest getting DANB certified by finishing the general chairside exam over the NYPDA exam, because becoming DANB certified provides a lot more advantages in the long run.
