Registered Dental Assistant (RDA)

A registered dental assistant has the ability to perform expanded functions, which can provide more value to the office and allows you to earn more. To become a registered dental assistant you will need to be licensed by the New Jersey State Board of Dentistry, which there are some requirements to meet. They are as follows:

1. Complete high school or its equivalent

2. Pass either the DANB CDA or COA exam within 10 years of applying for RDA

3A. Complete a CODA-accredited dental assisting program that’s approved by the New Jersey State Board of Dentistry within 10 years of applying for RDA, OR
3B. Have at least 2 years of work experience as a dental assistant (within 5 years prior to application) and pass the New Jersey Expanded Duties-General Exam, OR
3C. Have at least 2 years of work experience as a dental assistant (within 5 years prior to application). Also, complete a Board-approved expanded functions program and pass the New Jersey Expanded Duties-General Exam

4. Apply for a RDA license from the New Jersey State Board of Dentistry

How to Become a Certified Dental Assistant in New Jersey

The requirements to become a CDA is that you need to either complete a CODA approved program or have at least 2 years/3500 hours of experience, obtain CPR certification, and pass the DANB CDA exam. Afterwards you will be a nationally recognized dental assistant.

Radiography Requirements

You will need to obtain a license as a Dental Radiologic Technologist (DRT) if you wish to operate dental X-ray equipment. Licenses can be obtained from the New Jersey Bureau of X-Ray Compliance and you will need to:

1. Be at least 18 years old

2. Complete high school or its equivalent

3a. Pass the DANB Radiation Health and Safety (RHS) exam within 5 years before applying, OR
3b. Be a current DANB CDA

4. Complete a Board-approved dental radiography course

5. Apply to the Bureau of X-Ray Compliance for a Dental Radiologic Technologist (DRT) license
