In order to earn the status of Graduate Dental Assistant, you must:

Dental Assistant Qualified to Perform Expanded Functions

Expanded functions are additional duties you can perform in the office, but you must meet requirements before you can perform any expanded function. Expanded functions include preliminary inspection of oral cavities, infection control, bridge and crown restorations, orthodontic duties, applying dental sealants, coronal polishing, administration of nitrous oxide, and tooth whitening. Requirements are as follows:

1. Must be at least 18 years old, AND

2. Receive the necessary training for each specified function

For preliminary inspection of oral cavities, you must:

1. Be a Graduate Dental Assistant

OR

2a. Be a DANB CDA or have at least 400 hours of clinical dental assisting experience prior to taking the course, AND

2. Complete a Board approved course or exam in preliminary inspection of the oral cavity

For infection control, you must:

1. Be a Graduate Dental Assistant, OR

2. Complete a Board approved course or exam in infection control (e.g. DANB ICE review)

For provisional bridge and crown restorations, you must:

1a. Be a Graduate Dental Assistant, AND

1b. Complete a Board approved course or exam in crown and bridge restorations,

OR

2a. Have at least 400 hours of clinical dental assisting experience prior to the course, AND

2b. Meet preliminary inspection of the oral cavity requirements, AND

2c. Meet infection control requirements, AND

2d. Complete a Board approved course or exam in provisional crown and bridge restoration

For orthodontic duties, you must:

1a. Be a Graduate Dental Assistant, AND

1b. Complete a Board approved course or exam in orthodontic duties

OR

2a. Be a DANB CDA or have at least 400 hours of clinical dental assisting experience prior to taking the course, AND

2b. Meet preliminary inspection of the oral cavity requirements, AND

2c. Meet infection control requirements, AND

2d. Complete a Board approved course or exam in orthodontic duties

For application of dental sealants, you must:

1a. Be a Graduate Dental Assistant, AND

1b. Complete a Board approved course or exam in dental sealants

OR

2a. Be a DANB CDA or have at least 400 hours of clinical dental assisting experience prior to taking the course, AND

2b. Meet preliminary inspection of the oral cavity requirements, AND

2c. Meet infection control requirements, AND

2d. Complete a Board approved course or exam in dental sealants

For coronal polishing, you must:

1a. Be a Graduate Dental Assistant, AND

1b. Have at least 400 hours of dental assisting experience, AND

1b. Complete a Board approved course or exam in coronal polishing

OR

2a. Be a DANB CDA or have at least 400 hours of clinical dental assisting experience prior to taking the course, AND

2b. Meet preliminary inspection of the oral cavity requirements, AND

2c. Meet infection control requirements, AND

2d. Complete a Board approved course or exam in coronal polishing

For administration of nitrous oxide, you must:

1a. Be a Graduate Dental Assistant, AND

1b. Complete a Board approved course or exam in nitrous oxide, AND

1c. Obtain CPR certification

OR

2a. Be a DANB CDA or have at least 400 hours of clinical dental assisting experience prior to taking the course, AND

2b. Meet preliminary inspection of the oral cavity requirements, AND

2c. Meet infection control requirements, AND

2d. Complete a Board approved course or exam in nitrous oxide, AND

2e. Obtain CPR certification

For in-office tooth whitening, you must:

1a. Be a Graduate Dental Assistant, AND

1b. Complete a Board approved course or exam in in-office tooth whitening

OR

2a. Be a DANB CDA or have at least 400 hours of clinical dental assisting experience prior to taking the course, AND

2b. Meet preliminary inspection of the oral cavity requirements, AND

2c. Meet infection control requirements, AND

2d. Complete a Board approved course or exam in in-office tooth whitening

Expanded Function Dental Auxiliary (EFDA)

As an expanded function dental auxiliary, you will be able to place, contour and adjust restorative materials in the oral cavity. You will have to earn EFDA status however, which requires you to:

1. Be at least 18 years old, AND

2a. Be a Graduate Dental Assistant or registered dental hygienist, OR

2b. Be a DANB CDA and meet preliminary inspection of oral cavity and infection control requirements, AND

3. Have at least 4,500 hours of dental clinical experience, AND

4. Have a NH licensed dentist write a recommendation for an EFDA course, AND

5. Complete a Board approved EFDA course in dental restorations, AND

6. Obtain CPR certification, AND

7. Apply to the New Hampshire Board of Dental Examiners for an EFDA license

How to Become a Certified Dental Assistant in New Hampshire

Becoming a certified dental assistant (CDA) will allow you to perform additional functions, as well as train for specified expanded functions. You will also have the opportunity to earn a higher salary and collect additional benefits. In order to become a nationally recognized CDA, you must:

1. Complete a CODA accredited dental assisting program OR have at least two years/3,500 hours of dental assisting experience, AND

2. Obtain CPR certification, AND

3. Apply for and pass the DANB CDA exam

Radiography Requirements

Part of how to become a dental assistant in New Hampshire includes meeting radiography requirements. In order to legally operate dental x-ray equipment and perform radiography procedures in the state of New Hampshire, you must meet the following:
