As a dental assistant you may perform basic supportive dental procedures as listed under the state’s dental regulations. You can view the full list here. A dental assistant working under the general supervision for a sealant program must meet the following criteria:

  • Obtain and maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the AHA
  • Have at least 400 hours of clinical dental assisting experience
  • Complete a Board approved 6 hour course in infection control with OSHA protocol
  • Enter into a written agreement with the supervising dentist of the terms and conditions of practice under general supervision

Dental Assistant Qualified in General Duties

In order to perform expanded functions, you must register as a dental assistant qualified in general duties, which requires you to:

1a. Complete a 35 hour Board approved training program and pass the Maryland General Dental Assisting Expanded Functions (MDG) exam, OR

1b. Complete the DANB CDA exam, AND

2. Apply to the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners for registration

Dental Assistant Qualified in Orthodontics

In order to perform orthodontic functions, you must register as a dental assistant qualified in orthodontics, which requires you to:

1a. Complete a 35 hour Board approved training program and pass the Maryland Orthodontic Assisting Expanded Functions (MDO) exam, OR

1b. Complete the DANB COA exam, AND

2. Apply to the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners for registration

How to Become a Certified Dental Assistant in Maryland

There is also the option to become a certified dental assistant (CDA), which allows you to earn a higher salary as well as receive additional benefits. To qualify for the exam, you must:

1. Complete a CODA accredited dental assisting program OR have at least 2 years/3,500 hours of dental assisting experience, AND

2. Obtain CPR certification, AND

3. Apply for and pass the DANB CDA exam

Radiography Requirements

To operate dental x-ray equipment and perform radiography procedures, you must:

1. Be at least 18 years old, be of good moral character, and hold a high school diploma or its equivalent (e.g. GED), AND

2. Complete a 24 hour Board approved dental radiography course, AND

3. Complete the national DANB Radiation Health and Safety (RHS) exam or Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) exam, AND

4. Apply to the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners for a state certification
