Dental Auxiliary

how to become a dental assistant in kentuckyA dental auxiliary in the state of Kentucky can perform any basic supportive dental procedure listed under the state’s dental laws, as long as they are performed under the direct supervision of a licensed dentist of course. Registered Dental Assistant (RDA)

To become a registered dental assistant (RDA), you must obtain CPR certification that meets Board approved guidelines (e.g. AHA). The employing dentist must also:

1. Register the dental assistant on the Application for Renewal of Dental Licensure

2. Maintain a file for the registered dental assistant that includes:

  • Proof of CPR certification
  • Copies of any certificates of completion in the following areas: coronal polishing, radiation safety, radiation techniques course, and starting IV access lines
  • The employing dentist’s statement of the dental assistant’s competency in various duties

Registered Dental Assistant  Qualified in Coronal Polishing

In order to perform coronal polishing procedures, you must:

1. Be a registered dental assistant, AND

2. Complete an 8 hour course in coronal polishing from a CODA accredited program, AND

3. Obtain a certificate of completion from the program, which the employing dentist will keep

Registered Dental Assistant Qualified in IV Placement

In order to perform starting intravenous (IV) access lines, you must:

1. Be a registered dental assistant, AND

2. Complete a Board approved course in starting IV lines, AND

3. Obtain a certificate of completion from the program, which the employing dentist will keep

How to Become a Certified Dental Assistant in Kentucky

Becoming a certified dental assistant (CDA) is also an option, which allows you to earn a higher salary as well as receive additional benefits. It is highly recommended if you are thinking of becoming a dental assistant, and in order to become certified you must:

1. Complete a CODA accredited dental assisting program OR have at least two years/3,500 hours of dental assisting experience, AND

2. Obtain CPR certification, AND

3. Apply for and pass the DANB CDA exam

Radiography Requirements 

To operate dental x-ray equipment and perform radiography procedures, you must:

1a. Complete the DANB Radiation Health and Safety (RHS) exam, OR

1b. Complete a CODA approved course in radiation safety and technique, OR

1c. Complete a 6 hour Board approved course in dental radiography safety (DANB RHS Review) AND also meet one of the following:

At least 4 hours of instruction in dental radiography technique under the supervision and employment of a licensed dentist, OR

A 4 hour Board approved course in radiography techniques
