Oftentimes you will receive on the job training and as a dental assistant in Indiana, you will be able to perform any basic supportive dental procedures that are listed under the state’s dental law. Dental Assistant Qualified in Coronal Polishing

In order to qualify to perform coronal polishing, you must:

1a. Have at least one year of employed dental assisting experience AND complete a Board approved course in coronal polishing (that includes 5 hours of didactic instruction, 2 hours of laboratory work, successful performance on five patients under the supervision of a licensed dentist, and an affidavit that state competency signed by the supervising dentist), OR

1b. Complete a CODA accredited program that meets the requirements above, AND

2. Display the certificate of completion publicly in the dental office

Dental Assistant Qualified in Medicament Application

In order to qualify to perform coronal polishing (applying topical fluoride), you must:

1a. Have at least one year of employed dental assisting experience AND complete a Board approved course in coronal polishing (that includes 9 hours of didactic instruction, 2 hours of laboratory work, successful performance on five patients under the supervision of a licensed dentist, and an affidavit that state competency signed by the supervising dentist), OR

1b. Complete a CODA accredited program that meets the requirements above, AND

2. Display the certificate of completion publicly in the dental office

How to Become a Certified Dental Assistant in Indiana

Becoming a certified dental assistant (CDA) is highly recommended if you’re thinking about becoming a dental assistant, as it is a nationally recognized job title that allows you to make a higher salary as well as receive additional benefits. In order to become certified, you must:

1. Complete a CODA accredited dental assisting program OR have at least 3,500 hours/2 years of dental assisting experience, AND

2. Obtain CPR certification, AND

3. Apply for and pass the national DANB CDA exam

Radiography Requirements

In order to legally operate dental x-ray equipment and perform radiography procedures, you must obtain a dental radiography license from the Indiana State Department of Health/Division of Medical Radiology Services. The requirements are as follows:

1a. Complete a CODA accredited educational program in dental radiography, OR

1b. Complete a Board approved dental radiography program, AND

2. Be certified by the licensed dentist in an approved education program as proficient in performing procedures included in the dental curriculum, AND

3. Pass either the DANB CDA exam, the DANB RHS exam, or an ISDH approved exam, AND

4. Apply to the ISDH fro a dental radiography license
